My Healthy Lifestyle

It seems like my allergies have gotten the best of me. I spent Sunday cleaning our apartment from top to bottom, and when I emptied out our vacuum cleaner, I must’ve let a little too much dust fly back in my face. I’m due for an allergy shot today (yes, I’m one of those geeks ;) ), so that should help make me feel better. While I’m curled up on the couch with a cup of tea, I thought I’d share this healthy living survey with you — I read it first on Danica’s blog. Who doesn’t love a good survey, anyway :) ?

1. What did you eat for breakfast?

I haven’t eaten breakfast yet this morning, but yesterday (Monday) morning, I had two Van’s waffles, with tea on the side.

2. How much water do you drink a day?

I drink a lot of water. I normally drink one glass as soon as I wake up, refill my water bottle a couple of times while I’m at work, and I drink several glasses in the evening, more if I’m working out.

3. What is your current favorite workout?

I don’t know if I can pick just one! I am slowly getting back into running, which has been a good stress reliever, but I am also loving my new XTrain DVDs from Cathe. You’ll hear more about those soon :) .

4. How many calories do you eat a day?

I don’t count calories, so I’m not sure. I’m guessing it’s typically somewhere between 1500 – 2000? I know I’m on the higher end the day after a tough workout — I can always tell that I need more food — but I’m probably on the lower end if my workouts haven’t been as intense.

5. What are your favorite healthy snacks?

Apples, Greek yogurt, and carrots dipped in Laughing Cow Cheese or guacamole are my current snack time staples. When it gets closer to summertime, though, I will be all about the berries. I can never get enough fruit.

6. What do you usually eat for lunch?

As many of you know, my lunch is unusually early, so I normally eat small snacks throughout the day. Yesterday, I had carrots dipped in guacamole, pretzels dipped in Laughing Cow Cheese, and an apple. If that doesn’t seem like enough to you, it wasn’t. I was in a hurry and not feeling that great, so I just threw some random things in my lunchbox. On a more balanced day, I’ll have a salad, a piece of fruit, and yogurt with Grape Nuts.

7. What is your favorite body part to strength train?

My arms/upper body. Most of my strength is in my legs/lower body, so I have to work harder to strength train my upper body — I love feeling accomplished when I am done!

8. What is your least favorite body part to strength train?

My abs. It hurts… If you tell me it doesn’t, you’re not doing it right ;) . No pain, no gain, though, right?

9. What are your “bad” food cravings?

I don’t believe in “bad” food. “Bad” is a matter of opinion, anyway!

10. Do you take vitamins or supplements?

I take a probiotic every morning, and I drink Emergen-C if I feel like I’m getting sick. I have multivitamins and calcium chews, I just need to be better about taking them everyday!

11. How often do you eat out?

Normally, once or twice a week. Jordan and I usually go out for lunch after church on Sunday, but sometimes we’ll also go out on Saturday, or I’ll go out with a friend during the week. It just depends!

12. Do you eat fast food?

No. If I want to grab something fast, I’ll go to Chipotle or Panera. I also like Subway’s veggie subs!

13. Who is your biggest supporter?

My family. My husband, my parents and my sisters are always so supportive!

14. Do you have a gym membership?

Yes!

15. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?

7-8 hours.

16. Do you have a “cheat” day?

No — everything in moderation!

17. Do you drink alcohol?

Occasionally, on holidays and special occasions, I’ll have a drink.

18. Do you have a workout buddy?

Jordan and I go to the gym together, and I take classes with my sister, but I also enjoy working out alone.

19. What is the best thing that has changed about your life since committing to a healthy lifestyle?

I can’t say that there was a point in my life where I committed to a healthy lifestyle. I’ve always enjoyed exercising, and eaten in moderation. I think I’m more conscious of what I’m putting in my body now that I’m older, so of course, eating more fruits and vegetables and less dessert makes me feel better!

20. What was the last healthy thing you did?

I skipped my workout last night because I wasn’t feeling well, and I took some Emergen-C this morning to help fight off this sinus stuff. I’m already feeling better, so hopefully I’ll be feeling well enough to run tonight!

Now it’s your turn :) . Pick one of the questions to answer in the comments section below!

  1. Aw I hope you’re feeling better! I have workout partners too, but I also don’t mind working out alone :)

  2. Hi, Emily! I’m new to your blog but I just wanted to say I love your layout and your banner up top. I have a question for ya regarding those allergy shots — are they working?! I’m thinking about doing the series for pet dander, which I read on some Internet forum that the allergy shots don’t always work for pet dander. Anyway, I’d love to hear your experience!

    • Emily says:

Yes! Pet dander (cats, in particular), is one of my biggest allergies, and they definitely help! I’ve been on them for several years, and when I tried going off of them, I found that I was getting sick again, so I’m going to have to keep them up for maintenance, but luckily my insurance covers most of it, and it’s worth it to me. Feel free to email me if you have anymore questions!

  3. Allison says:

We have the same favorite snacks! I see those Chobani bites everywhere and I have yet to try them…I really need to.

  4. Love surveys :) I like your answer to “bad” foods – that it’s all a matter of opinion. I’d much rather see all food as “good” instead of making some bad and some good in my head. That just sets me up for failure.

  5. Emily says:

Totally agree with 7-8 hours of sleep! If I get anything less than 7 hours I am totally worthless. It still amazes me in college I could get 5-6 hours and not really even notice. lol

  6. Hollie says:

I absolutely love this survey and I might take it. I love not being able to pick a certain workout…people assume my favorite is running, it’s def not. There are a lot of different things I enjoy doing personally.

  7. love surveys :) A workout I’m loving lately is running too…I go in such phases with it, but right now I’m all about it. I can’t wait for the weather to warm up so I can get back outside!

  8. I love surveys! I agree with the answer to your question about “bad” foods. Classifying food as good and bad just sets you up for failure!

  9. I love your healthy balance! I also love this survey. I love to train my abs though!

  10. I’ve been meaning to try that Chobani bite yogurt! The flavors sound really good!

  11. Chobani! yums! :) Speaking of, I need to stock up on greek yogurt!
