How NOT to be Bridezilla

While Jordan and I are enjoying our second day in Hawaii, I’d like to introduce you to Alyssa from Fit and Fun in Third. I love reading Alyssa’s blog every day, and feel that we have a lot in common, so I’m so excited to have her guest posting for me while I’m gone! Enjoy!

Hi Perfection Isn’t Happy readers! I’m Alyssa and I blog over at Fit and Fun in Third , where I chat about staying fit and having fun! I’m a third grade teacher and a newlywed… and I love sharing my stories!

I want to start off by saying a huge CONGRATULATIONS to the beautiful Emily! I’m sure her wedding day was just perfect! I’m so excited to be hijacking Emily’s amazing little corner of the blog world while she is honeymooning!

Now, we all have heard of the term “Bridezilla,” and I think we are all fully aware of what it means. What it comes down to, though, is a bride letting stress get the best of her. I speak from experience that it is difficult to not let the ‘zilla monster get the best of you while you are planning your wedding!

I was married to my husband on July 15, 2011, and it was the most amazing, perfect day of my life. The process leading up to the day? Not so perfect.

As with any planning of big events, there will always be highs and lows along the way, no matter how you try to make it a smooth ride.

So what did I do to keep my inner Bridezilla at bay? How did I de-stress?

1. Lean on people who love you. When my fiance and I got engaged, my family and friends were offering to help in so many ways. At first, I felt bad taking them up on their offer. I wanted to be able to take care of it by myself. It wasn’t until my to-do lists took over my life that I finally gave in and asked for help. Looking back, my mom and my Nana were my saving grace! I realized that they genuinely wanted to help me out, and they were more than willing to do whatever they could! Lean on those people!

2. Acupuncture! I know some of you may think I’m crazy (and I may be ;) ) but acupuncture got me through wedding planning. In the beginning of the planning process, I got a lot of anxiety thinking about everything that needed to be done. I had heard that acupuncture helps with stress and anxiety, so I figured I’d give it a shot. Best decision! It worked like a charm, and my weekly appointments were something that I really looked forward to!

3. Spend uninterrupted time with your fiance. At least once a week, Bobby and I would turn off our phones, shut down our computers, and just be together. We didn’t have to be doing anything special. Whether it was cuddling on the couch watching TV, going for a picnic, or heading out for a cocktail… we needed that time. It brought us back to reality and reminded us of what was important!

4. Exercise and eat healthy. This is so important! The gym became my time to let out all the frustration that I had built up, and I had a lot! ;) I also noticed that when I ate healthy, my anxiety and stress were much more under control. I stuck to a lot of protein, veggies, and whole grains to help me feel my best!

5. Drink wine, get a pedicure, go for a walk…. do whatever it is that relaxes you! It’s so important that you take time for yourself. There were plenty of times that I got home from a stressful day, poured myself a glass of wine, and turned on trashy reality shows. I was able to zone out and unwind!

6. Enjoy every moment. I know, I know… I’m saying it’s stressful, and it is. But I will guarantee that you will look back on this time and smile. It is a crazy, amazing time in your life!

Of course, you can do all of this and still find yourself a bridezilla sometimes. And you know what? That’s totally okay. You’re a bride. People expect you to be a little crazy during this time.

The important thing is not whether you become a bridezilla or not, or not whether the flowers, food, music, pictures, etc. are perfect. What is important is that you and your fiance are about to become husband and wife. And when it comes down to it, nothing else matters.

  1. Alyssa is totally right! :) Great post!! ……I was constantly thinking ‘what really matters’ and I only came up with a few things. I took things with a grain of salt and went with the flow- almost in an annoying kind of way- thank heavens for the sister who helped keep the wedding all together! I would have been missing some key things if it wasn’t for her knowledge!
